How many times have you had to clean the carpet or an area of the house after your pup bombed on it? If there’s one thing dog owners can expect to learn almost right away, it’s that even the most well-behaved pet can act in, well, doggone ways. Prevent (or at least, reduce) bathroom boo-boos with the right dog training advice. Below are 6 that you can easily do.

1. Gear up! Positive housetraining is easier with the proper equipment on hand. Broke? Don’t worry, you can get a crate, a flat-buckled collar, and a leather or nylon leash on the cheap.

2. Make scents. Dogs have very superior smell receptors. Use this to help you in showing it where to doo. Get an old cloth or a paper towel and wipe it on your pup’s bottom after it tinkles. Don’t throw the cloth or towel out; save it for the next tip.

3. Pick the potty place. Choose a section of your hard where you can easily whisk your hound to, the instant it looks like it needs to “go”. Place the towel or cloth you saved in tip 2 on the spot where your little friend is taught to do his business.

4. Make time. Dogs learn best through repetition because they are creatures of habit. That said, it’s best to schedule mealtimes, potty time, and playtime; and pay special attention to keeping the schedule that you set.

5. Be quick to spot clues. Your hound is bound to mess up at some point, but you can keep accidents minimal by looking out for signs your pawed pal needs to relieve itself. These signs include

    circling
    pacing
intense and unexplainable sniffing of an area
    abrupt standing
    sudden restlessness

The moment you notice your hound behaving in such ways, quickly take it outside.

6. Learn patience. Canines do not learn in the same manner and with the same speed. So, if your pup is taking longer than most to learn, be patient and keep on working on your training. Don’t hesitate to ask other pet owners for dog training advice, too!

Training your four legged friend can be difficult. But if you love Spot, make use of the best dog training advice you can find to help your pooch become a model of good behavior.
